Axway is First Software Solutions Vendor Accepted as a Global Member of GS1 Healthcare Group
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), counterfeit drug sales were estimated to reach $75 billion by the end of 2010, and research suggests that, in the U.S. alone, over 36 million civilians will have bought medicines from unlicensed web pharmacies. Becoming a global healthcare member will enable Axway to help address these issues by working alongside GS1 to raise the bar on patient safety and supply chain efficiency.
“Extending our U.S. membership to a global level with GS1 Healthcare is something we have wanted to do for some time. Previously software vendors could only apply for national membership in GS1 working groups. When GS1 opened the door to global membership, we embraced the opportunity to start to set the agenda and improve patient safety on an international scale. Axway has invested a lot of time in standardization efforts, underscoring our deep commitment to international standards,” said Dave Bennett, CTO of Axway.
J. Michael Wallace, director, global standards & serialization, Abbott and tri-chair, GS1 Leadership Team elaborated, “We are at the point where we have started the process of moving the GS1 Healthcare standards from development to implementation to meet various requirements, traceability in particular. During this process, it is critical that we have the active participation and leadership of solution providers who can bring their systems integration experience to bear. The GS1 Healthcare Leadership Team is excited to have Axway as our first solution provider partner for Healthcare. The traceability experience they bring to the GS1 Healthcare effort will be extremely valuable as we move our focus towards implementation.”
GS1 has member organizations in over 100 countries and leads the field in working with concerned industry parties (such as manufacturers, distributors, retailers, customs organizations, software developers, local and international regulatory authorities) to drive the design and implementation of the most widely used standards system in the world across all sectors and industries.
GS1 standards enable health and economic benefits related to automatic identification, traceability, data synchronization and effective and efficient roll-out of automatic identification and traceability systems throughout the healthcare sector. This approach to defining global standards complements Axway's commitment to preventing counterfeiting and fraud within the healthcare industry.
Axway solutions widely support GS1 standards. Axway Track & Trace, the solution for visibility, efficiency and security in global supply chains, supports the GS1 Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) standard. Axway B2Bi, the integration solution for electronic business messaging and data synchronization, supports message formats and protocols defined in GS1 eCom and Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) standards.
The expanded membership will enable Axway to contribute to standards implementation on an international scale through its business, functional and technical expertise in building solutions for business interaction networks. This will drive best practices in tackling the main risks to patient safety across the industry, while remaining compliant with various regulations in different markets. Specifically, Axway's participation in the GS1 Healthcare Global Public Policy Work Group will contribute to compliance with future European directives.
Ulrike Kreysa, director, GS1 Healthcare says: “As a truly global company, Axway is a valuable member of the Healthcare working group, bringing software expertise together with a sound knowledge of global practice and regulatory environments. I am sure that Axway will continue to demonstrate its value and will be a fantastic part of the group. I am hopeful that other solutions vendors will follow the example that Axway has set forth.”
“Ensuring that our software is fully integrated and interoperable according to international standards is exceptionally important to us and our customers,” adds Bennett. “By expanding our relationship with GS1, we will be able to do even more to help ensure that our customers, and ultimately patients, get the best and most reliable service possible.”
