Microsoft, Mobility, and Security in a Zettabyte World
How big is our digital universe? Well, recent studies use metaphors like “exploding digital universe” to produce imagery reminiscent of the cosmic Big Bang Theory. Other related articles link the rapid deluge of data to imagery of a great “zettaflood.” By 2015, CenturyLink projects that 7.9 zettabytes of data will be created. What does that even look like? Well, according to CenturyLink, that looks like 18 million Libraries of Congress! The Library of Congress houses 147 million assets comprised of 33 million books and other printed materials, 3 million recordings, 64.5 million manuscripts, 12.5 million photographs, 6 million pieces of sheet music, and 5.4 million maps.
While approximately 70 percent of the digital universe is created by individuals, IDC predicts that businesses, healthcare organizations, and government agencies are responsible for the security, privacy, reliability and compliance of at least 85 percent of the same digital universe. This security and compliance responsibility is increasingly concerning when mobile working is also on the rise. According to experts at IDC, nearly 75 percent of the U.S. workforce will be mobile by the end of 2011.
In order to protect company networks and data, our hyper-mobilized workforce must be equipped with secure, easy-to-use information technology tools. Luckily, you don’t have to sacrifice security for mobility in our new zettabyte digital universe. While it is well established that Microsoft is the 800 pound gorilla of operating systems and other applications, dominating nearly 90 percent of market share, you also need not sacrifice the simplicity of your trusted Microsoft infrastructure.
